The Night Journey (Isra and Mi'raj)

The Night Journey (Isra and Mi'raj) is one of the greatest miracles with which Allah honored His Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and it is a unique spiritual journey in human history. This great miracle occurred in the eleventh year of the Prophetic mission, and Allah called it "Al-Isra" in the Quran - the blessed night journey from the Grand Mosque in Mecca to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. This magnificent journey demonstrates Allah's power over all things and highlights the great status of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) among all prophets and messengers.

Why is the Night Journey So Important?

The Night Journey is not just a great miracle, but a unique historical and spiritual event that shaped the course of Islam and Muslims. This journey demonstrates:

- Allah's absolute power over all things

- The great status of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) among all prophets

- The importance of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Islam as the first qibla and third holiest site

- Allah's mercy upon believers by reducing the prayer from fifty to five

- The connection between the Grand Mosque and Al-Aqsa Mosque

Beginning of the Blessed Journey

Circumstances Before the Journey

Before the Night Journey, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was going through a difficult period. His wife Khadijah (RA) had passed away, and his uncle Abu Talib, who had protected him, had also died. The Prophet (PBUH) faced persecution and harassment from the Quraysh in Mecca. He went to Taif to call people to Islam, but they rejected him and harmed him. In these difficult moments, Allah wanted to honor His Prophet and raise his status.

Gabriel's Call

On one blessed night, Gabriel (PBUH) came to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) while he was in his house in Mecca. Gabriel opened the Prophet's chest and washed it with the blessed water of Zamzam, then filled his heart with faith and wisdom. This spiritual washing was preparation for the great journey. After that, the Buraq was brought - a white mount longer than a mule and faster than lightning, the mount that prophets had ridden before. The Buraq is considered one of the most amazing creatures created by Allah, and is a heavenly mount used for travel between the heavens and earth.

Riding the Buraq

The Prophet (PBUH) mounted the Buraq, which moved at incredible speed. The Prophet (PBUH) traveled from the Grand Mosque in Mecca to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem in moments. This journey was a great miracle demonstrating Allah's power over all things. The Buraq flew at supernatural speed, passing through long distances in moments. During the journey, the Prophet (PBUH) saw many wonders, including cities, villages, and kingdoms.

The Isra Journey to Al-Aqsa Mosque

Arrival at Al-Aqsa Mosque

Upon arriving at Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Prophet (PBUH) tied the Buraq at the mosque gate. He entered Al-Aqsa Mosque and prayed two rak'ahs as a greeting to the mosque. This prayer was an expression of respect and appreciation for Al-Aqsa Mosque. Then all the prophets and messengers (PBUT) were brought to him, and the Prophet (PBUH) led them in prayer as their imam. This demonstrates the great status of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) among all prophets and messengers. All prophets from Adam to Jesus prayed behind Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), indicating that he is the master of prophets and their imam.

The Blessed Rock

After the prayer, the Blessed Rock was brought to the Prophet (PBUH). This rock is the place from which the Prophet (PBUH) ascended to the highest heavens. The Blessed Rock is considered one of the holiest places in Islam, and is believed to be the place of the Temple during Prophet Solomon's (PBUH) time. Today, the rock is located inside the Dome of the Rock at Al-Aqsa Mosque and is one of the most important Islamic landmarks in the world. The Dome of the Rock is considered a unique architectural masterpiece and demonstrates the greatness of Islamic art.

The Mi'raj Journey Through the Heavens

Ascending from the Lowest Heaven

The Prophet (PBUH) began the Mi'raj journey from the Blessed Rock. He ascended with Gabriel (PBUH) from the lowest heaven, where he met Prophet Adam (PBUH), the father of humanity. The Prophet (PBUH) saw great things in the lowest heaven, including souls being judged for their deeds. He also saw the angels that manage the affairs of the lowest heaven. Adam (PBUH) welcomed Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about his children from humanity who would follow him.

The Seven Heavens and the Prophets

The Prophet (PBUH) continued ascending through the seven heavens, meeting previous prophets in each heaven:

- In the second heaven: He met Prophet Jesus (PBUH) and John (PBUH), sons of the maternal aunt. They welcomed Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about their followers.

- In the third heaven: He met Prophet Joseph (PBUH), the possessor of beauty and perfection. He welcomed Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about his patience in trials.

- In the fourth heaven: He met Prophet Enoch (PBUH), whom Allah raised to a high station. He welcomed Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about his high status.

- In the fifth heaven: He met Prophet Aaron (PBUH), Moses' brother. He welcomed Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about his prophetic office.

- In the sixth heaven: He met Prophet Moses (PBUH), the Speaker of Allah. He welcomed Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about his patience with the Children of Israel.

- In the seventh heaven: He met Prophet Abraham (PBUH), the father of prophets. He welcomed Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and told him about his progeny of prophets.

Sidrat al-Muntaha

The Prophet (PBUH) reached Sidrat al-Muntaha, the furthest point that can be reached. There, the Prophet (PBUH) saw great things that humans cannot describe. He heard the scratching of the Pens that write the destinies of creation, and saw Paradise and Hell. He also saw the angels that carry the Throne, and the angels that glorify Allah continuously. Sidrat al-Muntaha is considered one of the greatest places in the heavens, and is the place where the knowledge of creatures ends.

The Prescription of Five Daily Prayers

Intercession for Muhammad's Ummah

At Sidrat al-Muntaha, Allah prescribed the five daily prayers upon believers. Initially, the prayer was fifty prayers per day and night. However, the Prophet (PBUH) interceded for his Ummah, and Allah reduced the number to five prayers, while maintaining the reward of fifty prayers. This demonstrates Allah's mercy upon believers and His love for the Ummah of Muhammad (PBUH). Prophet Moses (PBUH) advised Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to ask Allah for reduction, because his Ummah would not be able to pray fifty times a day.

Prayer as a Pillar of Islam

Prayer is the second pillar of Islam after the Testimony of Faith. Prayer was prescribed on the Night of Isra and Mi'raj, demonstrating its great importance in Islam. Prayer is the connection between the servant and his Lord, and is the first thing a servant will be judged for on the Day of Judgment. The five daily prayers are equivalent to fifty prayers in reward, demonstrating Allah's mercy upon believers.

Return to Mecca

Return in the Same Night

After completing the Mi'raj journey, the Prophet (PBUH) returned to Mecca in the same night. He woke up in his bed as if he had never left. This great miracle was a test of faith for believers - those who believed in Allah and His Messenger were truthful, while those who did not believe lied. When the Prophet (PBUH) told the Quraysh about the journey, they laughed at him and disbelieved him. But the truthful believers believed him and knew that this was a miracle from Allah.

Reaction from the Quraysh

When the Prophet (PBUH) told the Quraysh about the journey, they laughed at him and asked him about details of Jerusalem. The Prophet (PBUH) answered them with precise details, which made them wonder. Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA) was the first to believe the Prophet (PBUH), saying: "If he said it, then he has spoken the truth." This demonstrates the great faith of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA) in Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
