Dua for the deceased from authentic texts: the funeral prayer, after burial, at the graveside, and what benefits the dead. Each text with source and grading.
There is no single du'a for the dead that you memorise and repeat. What is established from the Prophet ﷺ is several du'as, each with its own place: at the funeral prayer, when the burial is finished, when passing graves, and for the family in the hours of condolence. Anyone searching for a dua for someone who passed away will mostly find long lists of wordings with no source, where the authentic and the merely circulated are mixed together.
This guide keeps the authentic texts only, each with its number and grading. It shows how the pronoun changes between له, لها and لهم depending on who is being prayed for. At the end it lists what we left out on purpose, either because the chain is weak or because scholars differ.
Dua for the deceased: the short list
Short answer: At the funeral prayer, say what Awf ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) memorised: «اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ» (Muslim 963). After burial: «اسْتَغْفِرُوا لأَخِيكُمْ وَسَلُوا لَهُ التَّثْبِيتَ» (Abu Dawud 3221, sahih according to al-Albani). The dead keep three doors open: ongoing charity, knowledge that benefits, and a righteous child who prays for them (Muslim 1631). The family's du'a is the foundation, and the answer is with Allah alone.

The funeral prayer du'a
The funeral prayer is built around du'a for the deceased. The best-known text is from Awf ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). He said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over a funeral and he memorised from his du'a:
"O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, give him well-being and pardon him. Honour his place of rest and widen his entrance. Wash him with water, snow and hail, and cleanse him of wrongs as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave or the punishment of the Fire." Sahih Muslim 963
Awf added: «حَتَّى تَمَنَّيْتُ أَنْ أَكُونَ أَنَا ذَلِكَ الْمَيِّتَ», "until I wished I had been that dead man". The words "or the punishment of the Fire" carry the narrator's doubt about the exact wording, and they are kept as reported.
The second wording is shorter and broader, covering the present and the absent, the young and the old:
"O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, our males and our females, those present and those absent. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep alive in faith, and whoever You take among us, take in Islam. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him." Sunan Abi Dawud 3201, sahih according to al-Albani
Tirmidhi (1024) and Ibn Majah (1498) report it with "Islam" and "faith" in the opposite order in the middle clause. Tirmidhi called the report of the father of Abu Ibrahim in that chapter hasan sahih, and al-Albani graded Tirmidhi's version sahih. It suits anyone who cannot name the deceased in the prayer, or who prays for several of the dead at once.
Dua for someone who passed away: changing the pronoun
The Muslim text was reported about one deceased man. For a woman, or for more than one person, the pronoun follows whoever is being prayed for. The meaning stays and only the form changes. This is a grammatical adjustment, not an addition to the text.
A man
A woman
Two people
A group
Women only
| The deceased | Wording |
|---|---|
The next clauses change the same way: "give her a home better than her home, a family better than her family, a spouse better than her spouse". These adjusted forms are not wordings reported verbatim, which is why they sit outside the quotation marks. The general wording «ذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا» (Abu Dawud 3201) stays available when the pronoun is hard to settle.
When praying for a mother, sister or daughter it is easy to slip into the masculine form out of habit. Learning the feminine form once, before you need it, helps in the hours of condolence.
Dua after burial
Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that when the Prophet ﷺ finished burying the dead he would stand over the grave and say:
«اسْتَغْفِرُوا لأَخِيكُمْ وَسَلُوا لَهُ التَّثْبِيتَ فَإِنَّهُ الآنَ يُسْأَلُ»
"Ask forgiveness for your brother and ask for him to be made firm, for he is being questioned now." Sunan Abi Dawud 3221, sahih according to al-Albani
The instruction is to seek forgiveness and ask for steadfastness, which means saying something like: O Allah, forgive him and keep him firm at the questioning. That is the authentic dua for the deceased after burial. A few seconds is enough, with no long recitation and no fixed formula.
Nothing authentic here is called talqin after burial. We return to it in the section on what we left out.
Dua for a deceased child
A child is included in the general wording «وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا» (Abu Dawud 3201). For a miscarried or stillborn child, the Prophet ﷺ said: «وَالسِّقْطُ يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَيُدْعَى لِوَالِدَيْهِ بِالْمَغْفِرَةِ وَالرَّحْمَةِ» (Abu Dawud 3180, sahih according to al-Albani). The du'a there is for the parents, for forgiveness and mercy, which suits a family in the pain of losing a child.
We know of no authentic Prophetic text with a special wording for one particular child beyond the above.
Dua for the dead at the graveside
Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ taught his companions to say when they went out to the graves:
«السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَلاَحِقُونَ أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ الْعَافِيَةَ»
"Peace be upon you, people of these abodes, believers and Muslims. We shall join you, Allah willing. I ask Allah for well-being for us and for you." Sahih Muslim 975
In Aisha's report (may Allah be pleased with her): «السَّلاَمُ عَلَى أَهْلِ الدِّيَارِ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ وَيَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنَّا وَالْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لَلاَحِقُونَ» (Muslim 974). Both are greeting and du'a. Neither asks the people of the graves for anything. The one visited is prayed for, not prayed to.
Dua for the deceased from the Quran
The Quran has wide-ranging wordings that a person can use for the believers who have died, family included:
«رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٌ رَحِيمٌ»
"Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and put no resentment in our hearts toward those who believe. Our Lord, You are Kind and Merciful." Al-Hashr 59:10
«رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ»
"Our Lord, forgive me, my parents and the believers on the Day the Reckoning is established." Ibrahim 14:41, the du'a of Ibrahim, peace be upon him
For parents in particular: «وَقُلْ رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا» (Al-Isra 17:24). The verse is general in wording about parents.
For the bereaved, the Quran says of the patient: «الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ» (Al-Baqarah 2:156). Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) reported this wording from the Prophet ﷺ: «إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا» (Muslim 918).
What the family says at the death, and what goes with it
The Prophet ﷺ said: «إِذَا حَضَرْتُمُ الْمَرِيضَ أَوِ الْمَيِّتَ فَقُولُوا خَيْرًا فَإِنَّ الْمَلاَئِكَةَ يُؤَمِّنُونَ عَلَى مَا تَقُولُونَ» (Muslim 919). When Abu Salama (may Allah be pleased with him) died, some of his family cried out, and the Prophet ﷺ said: «لاَ تَدْعُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِلاَّ بِخَيْرٍ» (Muslim 920). Then he prayed:
«اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لأَبِي سَلَمَةَ وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ فِي الْمَهْدِيِّينَ وَاخْلُفْهُ فِي عَقِبِهِ فِي الْغَابِرِينَ وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلَهُ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَافْسَحْ لَهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَنَوِّرْ لَهُ فِيهِ»
"O Allah, forgive Abu Salama, raise his rank among those who are guided, be his successor among those he leaves behind, forgive us and him, Lord of the worlds, make his grave spacious for him and give him light in it." Sahih Muslim 920
It is among the loveliest texts to keep for someone who has lost a relative: forgiveness, rank, care for the children, a spacious grave and light in it. The text is a du'a by name, which is a basis for using the deceased's name in a du'a for them.
What benefits the dead after death
It is not only the du'a of those present. The Prophet ﷺ said:
«إِذَا مَاتَ الإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَنْهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ ثَلاَثَةٍ إِلاَّ مِنْ صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ»
"When a person dies, their deeds end except for three: ongoing charity, knowledge that benefits, or a righteous child who prays for them." Sahih Muslim 1631, from Abu Hurayrah
The third is du'a. A righteous child keeps benefiting their parents by praying for them, which is the nearest door to every family.
On charity for the dead, a man asked the Prophet ﷺ: «إِنَّ أُمِّي افْتُلِتَتْ نَفْسُهَا وَأَظُنُّهَا لَوْ تَكَلَّمَتْ تَصَدَّقَتْ فَهَلْ لَهَا أَجْرٌ إِنْ تَصَدَّقْتُ عَنْهَا» and he answered: «نَعَمْ» (Bukhari 1388, Muslim 1004). The hadith sets no amount, so giving water, feeding someone in need or contributing to an endowment fits the meaning.
What we left out, and why
The aim is not to present what is not sound as established. These points are common on the pages that rank for this search:
Reciting Ya-Sin over the dead. The hadith «اقْرَءُوا يس عَلَى مَوْتَاكُمْ» is in Abu Dawud (3121). Al-Albani graded it weak, and Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut and Muhyi al-Din Abd al-Hamid in their editions did the same. We did not present it as an authentic du'a.
Talqin after burial. The report is from Abu Umamah, transmitted by al-Tabarani, and al-Haythami said in Majma' al-Zawa'id that its chain contains narrators he does not know. Scholars have given different views on acting on it, and we left it out because no sound text establishes it. It is separate from prompting a dying person to say the shahada before death.
Gifting the reward of Quran recitation to the dead. Scholars differ on whether the reward reaches. In a fatwa, Shaykh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) said most scholars hold that it does, that it is better to leave it because it was not reported from the Prophet ﷺ or his companions, and that du'a and charity benefit the dead. We therefore kept to du'a and charity, whose texts are established (Muslim 1631, Bukhari 1388).
Requesting a du'a for someone who passed away at Al-Aqsa Mosque
If you would like a du'a said by name for a parent or relative who has died, it can be requested at Al-Aqsa Mosque through the du'a service. A video is sent by email, usually within 48 to 72 hours. This adds to the family's own du'a and does not replace it. No authentic text makes du'a at Al-Aqsa answered faster, the answer is with Allah alone, and nothing is promised. The fee is for the service itself and is not a price for the du'a.

Frequently asked questions
What is the authentic dua for the deceased?
Several du'as, each with its place. At the funeral prayer: «اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ» (Muslim 963). After burial: «اسْتَغْفِرُوا لأَخِيكُمْ وَسَلُوا لَهُ التَّثْبِيتَ» (Abu Dawud 3221, sahih according to al-Albani).
What is the dua of the funeral prayer?
The du'a of Awf ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) «اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ» (Muslim 963), and a general wording «اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا» (Abu Dawud 3201, sahih according to al-Albani).
How do I make dua for a woman who passed away? Does the pronoun change?
Yes. The pronoun follows the person prayed for: laha for a woman, lahuma for two, lahum for a group. This is a grammatical adjustment to the text in Muslim 963, not a verbatim reported wording, and the general «ذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا» (Abu Dawud 3201) remains available.
What dua is said after burial?
After finishing a burial the Prophet ﷺ would stand at the grave and say «اسْتَغْفِرُوا لأَخِيكُمْ وَسَلُوا لَهُ التَّثْبِيتَ فَإِنَّهُ الآنَ يُسْأَلُ» (Abu Dawud 3221, sahih according to al-Albani).
What benefits the dead after death?
The Prophet ﷺ named «صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ» (Muslim 1631). Charity on their behalf is also confirmed in the hadith of the man who asked about his mother (Bukhari 1388).
Is the hadith about reciting Ya-Sin over the dead authentic?
The hadith «اقْرَءُوا يس عَلَى مَوْتَاكُمْ» is in Abu Dawud 3121 and was graded weak by al-Albani, Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut and Muhyi al-Din Abd al-Hamid, so we do not list it among the authentic du'as.
Want a du'a for a loved one who passed away said by name at Al-Aqsa Mosque?
The du'a is made by name at Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the video usually arrives by email within 48-72 hours.
