Waiting for a spouse can feel long, and it is easy to hear the delay as a verdict on yourself. Du'a is the oldest answer to waiting. Musa, far from home and with nothing, said “My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me” (Quran 28:24), and the verses that follow tell what came next. Each stage has its own words. Before a proposal: clarity and a good choice, while the istikhara prayer stays a separate act the person makes personally. During engagement: ease in the preparations and sincerity between the two families. After the wedding: sakinah, mawaddah and rahmah. The request also works as thanks on a first anniversary.
A gift for a son, daughter or sibling

No. Istikhara is a prayer and du'a that the person facing the decision makes personally (Sahih al-Bukhari 1162). This is a du'a spoken at Al-Aqsa by name, and the two can go together.

It can, but many choose wording that asks Allah for whatever is best in religion and character and to turn away what is not good, which echoes the istikhara du'a (Sahih al-Bukhari 1162).
