Dua for Job Interview: What Is Authentic, and What to Do Before and After

Dua for job interview: no authentic text is assigned to interviews. Sourced du'as for before and after, istikhara for an offer, and patience if refused.

There is no authentic du'a written specifically for a job interview. No verse and no hadith that we could trace says "say this before you walk into the room". For anyone searching for a dua for job interview success the night before, that is closer to good news than bad. The pages that hand out a "tested" interview du'a rarely give a source, while the texts that really fit the moment are firmly established.

This guide separates the two: which du'as are sourced and how they are graded, where each fits before and after the interview, and what the texts say about effort, waiting and rejection. To ask for a du'a to be made for you instead, see requesting a du'a for a job interview at Al-Aqsa.

Dua for job interview: the short list

Short answer: Before the interview, Musa's du'a «رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي» (Quran 20:25-28). If a question stumps you, «اللَّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا» (Ibn Hibban 974, sahih according to al-Albani). If an offer arrives and you are unsure, the istikhara du'a (Bukhari 6382). None of these promises the job.

Nerves before the interview

«رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي»

Quran 20:25-26

Worry in the waiting room

«اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ»

Bukhari 6369

A hard question

«اللَّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا»

Ibn Hibban 974 (sahih, al-Albani)

While the search drags on

«اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ»

Tirmidhi 3563 (hasan)

Deciding on an offer

The istikhara du'a

Bukhari 6382

Is there an authentic dua for job interview success?

No. We found no text assigned to interviews, exams or any job-related meeting. Several of the pages that rank for "job interview dua" list ten or thirteen phrases for "interview success" and attach no verse or hadith number to any of them. A phrase with no chain should not be presented as "the Prophet's du'a for interviews".

The honest approach is to take a sourced du'a said in a comparable situation and use it as a general du'a whose meaning suits the moment. Every du'a below is used that way, and where a text was said about something else, the article says so.

Before the interview: prepare, then rely

The texts do not set du'a against effort. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, and in each there is good. Strive for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be helpless" (Sahih Muslim 2664, from Abu Hurayrah). Research the employer, rehearse the answers aloud, plan the route. That is the "strive" half.

The other half is in a second hadith: "If you relied on Allah as He deserves to be relied upon, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out in the morning hungry and return in the evening full" (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2344, hasan sahih according to al-Tirmidhi, sahih according to al-Albani). The birds leave the nest. Going to the interview is part of tawakkul.

The Quran gives the order in one line: «فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ» (3:159), "when you have decided, rely on Allah".

On the way in: the du'a of Musa

Sent to confront Pharaoh, Musa ﷺ said:

«رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي * وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي * وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي * يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي»

"My Lord, expand for me my chest, ease my task for me, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech." Quran 20:25-28

An interview asks for the same three things: a calm chest, an easy task, and words that land clearly with the person across the table. The verses were not revealed about interviews, so this is use by meaning, which is how it usually gets attached to the situation.

A second du'a of Musa fits the job search itself. He had left Egypt with nothing, watered the animals of two women, sat in the shade and said:

«رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ»

"My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me." Quran 28:24

The verse guarantees nothing. It admits need and asks. Two verses later one of the women says of hiring him: «إِنَّ خَيْرَ مَنِ اسْتَأْجَرْتَ الْقَوِيُّ الْأَمِينُ» (28:26), "the best you can hire is the strong, the trustworthy", a fair description of what to bring into the room.

When a question stumps you

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to say:

«اللَّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا، وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزْنَ إِذَا شِئْتَ سَهْلًا»

"O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy if You will." Sahih Ibn Hibban 974, graded sahih by al-Albani in al-Silsilah al-Sahihah 2886

It is not in the six books, so check it in Ibn Hibban and in al-Silsilah. Said silently it takes five seconds, which suits a pause in an interview better than a long wording.

For nerves in the waiting room, Anas also heard the Prophet ﷺ say often: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ» (Bukhari 6369). Worry, helplessness and laziness are the three things an interview exposes. More is in du'a for anxiety and worry.

Before the interview: a du'a in your own words

This wording is ours, not a hadith:

"O Allah, expand my chest and ease my task. Put the right words on my tongue and keep my answers honest. Give me what is best for me in my religion, my livelihood and my end, and make me content with what You decree."

Asking in your own language is allowed, and better than reciting a phrase you do not follow.

Dua for success after a job interview

After an interview most people replay every sentence they said. The texts give a few things to do with that time.

Be thankful. The Prophet ﷺ said: "How wonderful is the affair of the believer, all of it is good, and that is for no one but the believer: if something good befalls him he is grateful and that is good for him, and if hardship befalls him he is patient and that is good for him" (Sahih Muslim 2999, from Suhayb). Thanks does not wait for the result.

Ask for halal provision while you wait. Ali reported that the Prophet ﷺ taught a man who could not meet what he owed: «اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ», "O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful over what You have made unlawful, and enrich me by Your favour so that I need no one but You" (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3563, hasan). The context was debt, not work, but the request is for lawful income and is worth saying through a long search.

Ask to be selected. «رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ» is a fine way to do it. No text gives a formula that makes selection certain, and anyone selling one is selling something the texts do not contain.

If an offer comes: istikhara

Jabir said the Prophet ﷺ taught istikhara in all matters, as he taught a surah of the Quran: when one of you intends something, let him pray two rak'ahs apart from the obligatory prayer, then say:

"O Allah, I seek the best through Your knowledge, I seek ability through Your power, and I ask of Your great favour. You are able and I am not, You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair, then decree it for me. And if You know that it is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree the good for me wherever it is, then make me content with it." Sahih al-Bukhari 6382

At the point of "this matter" the one praying names the need, here the job. Istikhara is prayed by the person deciding, and nobody can pray it on their behalf. It is for choosing between options, not for guessing whether an interview will go well. Look at pay, hours, ethics and family first, ask, then act on the option that opens up.

If the answer is no

Rejection after real preparation stings. The Quran says: «وَعَسَىٰ أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ» (2:216), "perhaps you dislike something and it is good for you". The verse came about fighting, so its general wording is the lesson, and we do not claim it was about jobs.

The hadith that says to strive also says what to say afterwards: "Do not say 'if only I had done this, it would have been such and such', but say: 'Allah's decree, and He does what He wills', for 'if only' opens the door to Satan" (Muslim 2664). That does not forbid reviewing what went wrong. Ask for feedback, fix the answer you fumbled, apply again. (94:5), "with hardship comes ease".

Asking someone else to pray for you

The Prophet ﷺ said that a Muslim's du'a for his brother in his absence is answered (Sahih Muslim 2733). Family and friends can pray for you the night before.

If you would also like a du'a said by name at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, you can read how the request works for a job interview or go straight to the packages. It adds to your own preparation and du'a and does not replace them, and it makes no promise about the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an authentic dua for a job interview?

No. We found no verse or hadith assigned to interviews. What is established are general du'as that fit by meaning: Musa's du'a «رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي» (Quran 20:25-28) and «اللَّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا» (Ibn Hibban 974, sahih according to al-Albani).

What dua should I read before an interview (interview se pehle ki dua)?

Musa's du'a (Quran 20:25-28) on the way in, the du'a for refuge from worry (Bukhari 6369) in the waiting room, and «لا سهل إلا ما جعلته سهلا» if a question stumps you. Asking in your own language is also fine.

Is there a dua for success after a job interview?

No wording is assigned to the waiting period. The texts give gratitude (Muslim 2999), asking for halal provision (Tirmidhi 3563, hasan), patience if the answer is no, and istikhara if an offer arrives (Bukhari 6382).

Can I ask Allah to be selected in an interview?

Yes, in your own words or with «رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ» (28:24). No text promises selection. Answering is with Allah alone.

Should I pray istikhara before an interview?

Istikhara is for choosing between options (Bukhari 6382). It fits when you must decide whether to accept an offer, not when you only want to know how an interview will go. Prepare and make du'a before the interview.
